Configuration on Mac (10.8.x) system says I’m missing a plugin and then connects me to the Oracle site where I can install Java 7. Installing Java 7 turns off Java in Chrome so I’m hesitant to do this. Do I have to have Java 7 on the Mac to run the SCK?

I did update to Java 7 and the applet does run. The issue now is usb ports. See my new discussion.
If you are having trouble with Java 7 and Firefox on a mac, make sure Firefox is set to run in 64 bit mode. You can check by doing a ‘get info’ on firefox.app.

We know there are a lot of issues with the Java Applet, we are working hard to finish the new uploader that is based on a browser native extension. At the moment we recommend Safari 6 for Mac users on Mac OS 10.8 and below.
